Our First Cria of 2016 has Arrived

Last Monday, on a rather miserable and rainy day, Pandora gave birth to our first cria of the year. Cria is a Spanish word, meaning creation. We have 4 crias due this year and it is always exciting awaiting their arrival mixed with anxiety until we know everything is ok with the cria.

This is Pandora's second cria, and for her first born, Orlando she was a super Mum, very attentive and a large milk supply - what more could a baby alpaca need?

The birth was all normal, a light brown, female and she was lively but quite slow to the milk bar. However, once she found the drink supply there has been no stopping her. She is very playful and is putting on weight which is always a good sign that everything is going well.

The weather has been quite wet which has meant she has had a coat on for most of the time, but, today the sun has been shining so she has had the sun on her coat which is beautifully soft and shiny.

Choosing names for the cria is always fun and we may have some in mind but then it depends on what the cria is like and their colour etc. This time we have followed Greek mythology. As Mum is called Pandora, we have called her Daughter Hope.....because, when Pandora opened the box which contained all of the evils of the world, they all flew out leaving only Hope inside.

Now Hope needs a friend to play with and Bonita should birth next...so, watch this space.

Pic is of Hope at 12 hours old with her Mum.
